CONTE SIXTH GRADERS RECEIVE PEP TALK

On February 25, 2008, Conte Middle School Sixth graders had an exciting visitor Gail Grandchamp. Gail Grandchamp is North Adams own hero. When Gail was growing up, she admits for a time focusing on school and her future was not at the top of her list. BUT once she was motivated to learn and be the best she could there was no stopping Gail.

Gail loves all sports, and is good at most. Boxing has always been her favorite even though it has not been an easy road. Gail was not accepted as a boxer because she was a girl. "Girl's cry and fix their hair", is the message she was getting about female boxers. Gail would not take this lying down. She fought for the right for women to box but is still fighting for women boxing in the Olympics.

Gail's visit was to motivate the sixth graders with their upcoming MCAS tests. She told of many obstacles she had to over come to be the champ. Some of her favorite quotes to live by include:
"Do Nothing and Nothing Happens, Do Something and Something Happens" "Writing Crystallizes Thoughts"
"The Five P's: Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance

Each student received an autographed copy of Gail's new book "A Fighter with a Heart". Gail is backing the sixth grade teachers with their motivational program. What a great addition to the unstoppable 6th grade team. We will keep an "Eye on those Tigers".
